Boilerplate: The Upfronts that I write about are for the five main broadcast networks- NBC and FOX (Monday), ABC (Tuesday), CBS (Wednesday), and The CW (Thursday).  I don’t bother tracking the cable network Upfronts because I would never be able to stop writing.  TBS, USA, HBO, and so forth all have wildly different schedules and more new programming than you can shake a stick at.

FOX has a long-standing tradition of killing off genre shows, but they also give more genre shows a chance than almost any other network, save perhaps The CW.    This year, they really haven't added much new to the fall schedule.

In the gone club: Almost Human, Raising Hope, Enlisted, Surviving Jack, Dads, The X-Factor, and Rake.  American Dad is moving to TBS.

FOX has renewed: Bob's Burgers, Bones, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Following, Glee, The Mindy Project, New Girl, The Simpsons, Sleepy Hollow.

Here's the fall line-up, not including midseason shows.  As always, new shows are in caps.

I don't have details on all the new shows yet, so I'll be addeding pictures and trailers as they become available.  Here's what I do know:

Gracepoint: This is based on “Broadchurch,” the U.K.'s popular crime drama. They even got David Tennant to reprise the role.

Mulaney: Comedian John Mulaney's half hour comedy show is about a stand-up comedian (Mulaney) trying to take his career to the next level.  It features Martin Short (who plays his boss) and Elliott Gould (his neighbor).

MULANEY-01

Utopia: A reality show that  moves 15 everyday Americans to an isolated, undeveloped location – for an entire year – and challenges them to create their own civilization.

Empire: (for midseason) A family drama set amidst a hip-hop empire will feature both original and current music. Steven says: Nashville for the hip-hop set?  I'll pass.

Gotham: Based on DC Comics characters, this drama explores the origin stories of eventual Batman ally James Gordon, a detective with the Gotham City Police Department, and his battle with the villains who made the city famous.   Steven Says: Bruce Wayne is eleven years old in this show's time-line, so this is very pre-Bats.  This could be very, very good, but it could also make comic book purists very, very angry.  I'll give it a chance.

Red Band Society: A group of teenagers meet as patients in the children's wing of a hospital and become unlikely friends and allies in this comedic young soap. Steven Spielberg will executive-produce. will star. Steven says: I'll pass, thanks.
